Scheduled for Sunday the 10th of May
Description:
1. BACKGROUND
More than a year ago the islands of Altis and Stratis were devastated by the outbreak of a bovian virus which killed most domesticated livestock. As a consequence and in fear of transmutation, residents were mass evacuated to the mainland except for small groups of resistant folk. The remaining islanders were ‘confined’ to the seaside resort of Agia Marina on Stratis and Kavala the capital of Altis.
The Ottomen, a little known Turkish militant faction, supported and supplied by the Russian mafia, ceased this opportunity to invade. In less than a month the Ottomen had landed in the north of Altis and rapidly laid siege to the rest of the island and subsequently also Stratis.
The Turkish government issued a media statement disassociating themselves from this faction, stating that the Ottomen are a “bunch of fanatics that are hell bent on revenging the defeat of the Turkish garrison on Altis by Rear Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis on 8 October 1912”.
The airport on Altis is equipped with a military specification runway capable of accommodating Antonov freighters. If it remained in Ottomen hands, it could have resulted in an international incident and could potentially have reactivated global nuclear awareness.
The Greek government approached NATO for assistance.
——-
In the months that followed, ZA Dragon Ranger Platoon played a pivotal role as part of NATO combined arms operations that liberated both Stratis and Altis from the Ottomen. In a small ceremony held in Kavala Lieutenant Raven received the NATO Meritorious Service Medal for acts of courage in difficult or dangerous circumstances from Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.
NATO now keeps a small peacekeeping force, comprising mostly engineers, on the islands under the control of Subedar Major Ballasubramanium. Their role is to occupy and safeguard the airports, mop-up isolated pockets of resistance and to clear the islands of the dregs of war including arms caches, mines, IED’s etc. Plans are currently underway to repopulate the islands with their native inhabitants.
Tensions remain high at the UN and the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, largely because of the uncertainties surrounding Russian involvement with the failed invasion. No official communications have emanated from Russia. General Martin Dempsey has been seen entering but not leaving the White House.
Before returning home in a few days’ time, ZA is taking some well-deserved shore leave at the seaside resort of Agia Marina on Stratis. Most of their equipment has already been shipped out. Mornings are spent under instruction from Captain Phoenix on topics such as Russian weapons familiarisation, dark is your friend and the art of stealth. The afternoons are spent fraternising with the locals on the beach. The word is that Dragon 2-2 is currently leading the pineapple-bear-brew cup.
2. SITUATION
Situation Time: 19h00 (nightfall around 19h45)
Lighting: Heavily overcast, occasional lightning
Weather: Tropical storm season
A. Enemy Forces: The last isolated pockets of Ottomen guerrillas have been eliminated and NATO is well advanced in collecting and destroying all captured arms and ammunition. Several military and improvised explosive devices have also been found mostly through interrogation. Engineers are scanning the islands for remaining threats before the locals return.
B. Friendly Forces: NATO forces, at Company strength, are garrisoned mostly at the island airports with limited armament. Major Ballasubramanium has setup Headquarters in the military compound east of and overlooking Stratis Airbase. Major ground and air assets and the bulk of his forces are stationed in the air base with a FOB at Air Station Mike which also serves as the main communications link with NATO Head Office in Brussels.
ZA Platoon is holding in Agia Marina on shore leave. They are expected to return home within the next few days via Stratis Airbase. ZA’s equipment is en route to their home base.
B. Civilians: Civilian presence is confined to Agia Marina on Stratis and Kavala on Altis, both of which have been cleared of guerrillas and explosive devices. All major roads have been declared safe for travel.
