    1. SITUATION

    Situation Time: 16H30L 6 October 2015

    Lighting: Late afternoon, sunset at17h42

    Weather: clear, Some clouds.

At 14h33 this afternoon a military satellite alarmed operators after it detected unusually dense vehicle movements in a valley close to Kinduf Airfield.  Before the viewing window on the area passed, the operator was able to identify one stationary convoy of personnel trucks escorted by armed technicals, three T34 tanks, one ZU-23 installation and a foot patrol of 2 armed individuals. It is possible there are many more assets in the area that the operator could not identify in time. Military Intelligence have studied recent historical data on the area for changes that may have led to what seems to be an IS force readying themselves for an assault. The only critical change they could identify is the arrival of three new helicopters acquired by the local government forces. The helicopters are awaiting final certification and are not yet cleared for active duty. The activation of these new helicopters will drastically improve the fight against IS in the region. MI believe IS will be assaulting the airport by sundown in an attempt to destroy the new helicopters.

US forces stationed in the region use the Airfield extensively for troop movements and supplies. Local government does not have the required forces in the immediate vicinity to counter the assault and have requested the help of US forces.

    A. Enemy Forces:

Islamic state forces are known to be in the settlement of Amir in the valley NE of Kinduf Airfield. As far as could be ascertained by MI during the short window they had,  IS have multiple infantry sections, three T34 tanks and  armored civilian vehicles. One ZU-23 was spotted but MI believes there may be more.

    3. General Instructions

As received from Command. ” Civilian casualties should be kept to a minimum, although we can assume that the inhabitants of Amir are sided with IS since no hostages or captured civ’s were spotted. We have no objection to the destruction of infrastructure so long as mass civ casualties are avoided. In previous situations where civilians were aligned to the enemy cause, we have have noticed an increase in civilians benefitting the cause as suicide bombers with dead man switches, whether it be in person or in vehicles. Great caution is to be taken with civilians or vehicles approaching friendlies with no regard for their own safety or ignoring warning shots.”
