1. SITUATION

Situation Time: 04:30L

Lighting: 1/4 Moon, sunrise 05:00L

Weather: Partly cloudy, unlimited visibility.

U.S Ranger Zulu Company Alpha platoon is on deployment in Syria, training and supporting the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the city of Zargabad.

The Syrian Army has launched an offensive in the region to try and push the FSA out, with the 2nd Guard Battalion leading the charge. MI has determined that A company of the 2nd Guard Battalion has been tasked with Zargabad.

ZA will assist the FSA in repelling the Syrian Army’s attack and holding Zargabad.

A. Enemy Forces:

The enemy force consists of a Company of the Free Syrian Army regular, mechanised infantry military unit with combat experience during the civil war in Syria. It has had to replace its equipment losses, particularly vehicles, with ragtag and old replacements. The company consists of a tank platoon supported by a mechanised infantry platoon and about a platoon or two of motorised infantry dismounts and mortar support. Air support is probably in the form of UH-1 helicopters.

The best vehicles they had were the T-72s; however, most of those have been destroyed, and older T-34s or T-55s can be expected.

MI has observed them forming NW of the city during the night in preparation for an attack at sunrise, as they have limited night fighting capabilities, so expect the attack to commence within 20 to 40 minutes. They have also appeared to have broken off some units to flank around the South.

B. Friendly Forces:

Zulu-Alpha is situated at FOB Paladin in the centre of Zargabad. The FOB is well fortified with a repair depot and vehicle rearmament, but has 1 RG-31 with surveillance capabilities.

The Free Syrian Army in Zargabad is a well-equipped and experienced irregular infantry force. They are equipped with Warsaw Pact small arms, HMGS, several Dragon ATGMS and a mortar crew. There are approximately 46 equally spread out into 4 strategically placed outposts in the centre of Zargabad – NW, SW, NE and SE outposts. These outposts consist of a bunker surrounded by sandbags and barbed wire fortifications, with each outpost having one of the adjacent buildings fortified and used to reinforce the outpost. Their mortar crew is located just West of the Mosque between the NW and SW outposts.

C. Civilian Presence: A large civilian presence is in the city. They are sympathetic to the FSA.
